The very first "computer" was really more of an elementary calculator that filled a whole room and could only subtract and add. The creator, Charles Babbage, called it the Difference Machine. His next edition of the machine, the Analytical Machine, could subtract and add but could also multiply and divide. The Analytical Machine could be programmed by feeding it slips of paper with hole punches in it, and a woman named Ada Lovelace is credited with creating the first computer program. She also recognized that if machines could handle numbers, they could probably handle things like letters and algorithms too, paving the way for the modern computer.
