When the defenders of Bataan surrendered, the Japanese commander promised the American commander that his men would be treated correctly and that the Japanese weren't barbarians. He organized a way to transport the prisoners to were his commanders wanted them to be. Unfortunately, the expected 25,000 prisoners turned into 76,000. The Japanese soldiers stripped their enemies of anything valuable, from wedding rings to toothbrushes. The trail was littered with dead and dying because the hospital guards told prisoners who weren't healed to go on the trip.
