The nation of Africa was for a long time ruled by oppressive and often racist regimes descended from the imperialist era. When communism and the Soviet Union were attempting to spread their power, they put some focus on the countries of Africa, and many of the revolutions in Africa were started by Socialist political parties and powers. For this reason, many Africans equate the words freedom and communism, even though communism usually was as oppressive as the previous regime.
