The upper echelons of Soviet power were fraught with schemes and politicians trying to gain more power and influence for themselves. When Stalin was alive, his word was law, and the ambitious politicians hung on him every word whether they were simply eating dinner with him or going on vacation with him, both of which they reportedly said to be very stressful situations. After Stalin's death, Khrushchev put a plot in place to have his associate Berria arrested. He reportedly spent an evening with him and when they left shook his hand, and then later said that he knew the man would likely be in prison by the next morning. He also said that he made sure to have a gun in his pocket the next day.
