The Spanish kingdom wasn't just interested in squeezing as much gold from the American natives as possible, they wanted to make an Empire like Britian. After all, the United Kingdom was the most powerful realm in the world at the time, and they got that way by settling and colonizing everywhere possible. The Spanish had already conquered huge swathes of southern North America and plenty more of what would become the modern-day United States. Now they set about making it into an Empire. An Empire is more than just land and people. The People have to be united under a common cause. However, the cultures of the American natives and the Spanish Europeans were wildly different, however, the Spaniards converted most of them to Roman Catholicism. That worked until the natives rebelled and made themselves their won country, Mexico.
