Ota Benga was a pygmy kidnapped from Africa and sold to a Zoo to be displayed as a "primitive man". The zoo had him live with the monkeys in the monkey house and forced him o act like an animal. However, some of the public revolted against treating him like this, and the Zoo allowed him out of the monkey cage. However, he was followed by huge crowds that mocked, jeered, and laughed at him, causing him a great amount of anger and stress. Multiple times he was almost killed by the crowd until he built himself a bow and arrows and injured several of the Zoo's customers. He was given to a Reverand who ran an orphanage. There, Ota was taught how to read, play baseball, and treated like a human. Eventually, he was given a job as a laborer, but after realizing there was no way for him to return to his beloved homeland, committed suicide in March of 1976.
