The membership in a Communist party speaks highly of how Communism actually worked. Peasants and women, despite both groups being supposedly "freed" from evil capitalist dictators, were woefully underrepresented in party membership. Even groups that were made up mostly of women usually had male representatives in the party. In a non-Communist state, membership was voluntary, but in a Communist state, membership was required for pretty much having a career and putting bread on the table.
