Most Communists in the west did not actually join Communist Political Parties, even though these surely existed, but often could wield much influence and power as they were usually upper-class scholars. However, it was very surprising to the people of the time to find out that more people than you might think had a devotion to the Communist government. Different people viewed the Soviet Union as a warning, but others saw it as a wonderful example.
