Ape-men were hugely popular in the early 1900s in Circus sideshows. The admission fee was not cheap, and yet they still were one of the most profitable attractions. They did much, unfortunately, to convince the mostly uneducated masses of evolution and reinforced racist ideas. Africans were made to act like animals and the circus owners explained how this was how they lived naturally, which was a complete lie. Most scientists disagreed with how the circuses portrayed "ape-men" but most didn't voice their opinions.
