Probably the biggest influence on convincing the masses of evolutionary theory's correctness was fairs and circuses, that gleefully displayed "missing links" such as Africans, Zulus, South American natives, and pretty much every non-white race. They reaped significant rewards for it, as these shows were very popular. Another popular addition was pygmies, which we're told to be very animalistic with no marriage, no concept of property, and living like animals. However, the pygmies in truth lived more morally then most Europeans did. They did have marriage and property, and pre-marital sex was virtually unknown.
