The Rescuer's Down Under: The Flop That Succeeded

The Rescuer's Down Under was considered a flop for Disney. It was released at the same time as Home Alone and ultimately wasn't able to compete, grossing $47.4 million compared to Home Alone's $476.7 million. However, as much as a financial flop as it was, the movie was revolutionized animation, including helping to bring about Pixar, one of the most influential animation studios. The movie was the first to use a new animation system called CAPS (Standing for Computer Animation Production Software). This system allowed animators to scan their drawings into a computer. The drawings were then inked and colored by digital artists. These were scanned into background images in a way that allowed the camera to move in the animation, not just the characters. This technology made for incredible 2D animated scenes and revolutionized animation, and it stayed that way until 3D animation came along.
