Ranger’s Apprentice The King of Clonmel & Halt’s Peril (Content and quality review)

 Overview
There are rumors of a mysterious cult arising in the kingdom of Clonmel, a cult led by the scheming Tennyson, who is plotting to use his influence to take over not just Clonmel but Araluen, Will’s homeland, as well.

Negative
Tennyson’s cult is nothing more then a trick to get money from the locals, but there is some talk of the “golden god” Alessias. A villager mentions that there are other gods that give both bad and good and want only a prayer in return, implying that none of the religions of this world are anything like Christianity. As for language there  are two or three scattered “da*n”, much less then normal for Rangers Apprentice. There is some minor bloody violence and one character is shot by a poison arrow and almost dies from the ensuing sickness.

Positive
Our heroes drop everything to heal their friend when he is shot by the poison arrow, and there is a strong emphasis on looking after the elderly. They also cease tracking Tennyson at one point to deal with a Scotti raiding party, saving the villagers lives even if they aren’t that grateful.

Conclusion
The author has some basic character development, unfortunately less then The Sorcerer of the North. I enjoyed the second one as the tension from the poisoned character was enough to keep me interested. However, I wish he had started that tension sooner in the story, as the first half blunders around a Scotti raid and some boring traveling. Not a bad read but could definitely have used some work.
