Should Movies Be About Entertaining or Teaching Morals?
People watch movies to be entertained, which of course is how it is supposed to be. That's why movies were made. That's why many movies depict things that couldn't happen in real life because most people think its more fun than watching a movie about something that couldn't happen to them. It's more unpredictable, and the stakes are often much more exciting than normal life. Humans have a sort of instinctive feeling that tries to seek meaning in all of their experience though. Movies that only depict something exciting usually don't feel very rewarding, because we aren't getting anything out of it other than being entertained. You might think that this means you should just go study all day or something, but of course, if you tried to do that you most of us would burn out within a few hours. What can you remember better; the last story you read/watched or the math problem you did last? Therefore, this makes us conclude that movies are for teaching morals, but movies were made for entertainment, so this produces a dilemma. My conclusion is that movies have to be both entertaining (The fireballs, ka-boom, pew-pew-pew, jokes, etc.), and teach us morals through the story. That's one of the reasons why I like the How to Train Your Dragon trilogy so much. It balances both of these perfectly. Anyway, that's my opinion. Let me know what you think in the comments!
