Bonhoeffer

Bonhoeffer, after he was shut down from publishing by the Nazis, became part of the Abwehr, a military intelligence branch of the Third Reich. The Abwehr was secretly involved in a major conspiracy to kill Hitler with a bomb. Other attempts had failed when the bombs mysteriously didn't detonate, but this time they were ready. Bonhoeffer became engaged during this time but unfortunately was caught by the Gestapo when he became involved in smuggling fourteen Jews to neutral Switzerland. He was optimistic about his survival in prison, as the war was almost over, and Germany's fate was sealed. Everyone accept Hitler, who believed that he was going to win a major victory and fulfill his goal of purifying humanity. Unfortunately, the plot to assassinate Hitler was discovered, and the dictator ordered the execution of thousands, including Bonhoeffer. The pastor died at the age of thirty-nine, only three weeks before the conclusion of the war.
