East Germany had been occupied by the Soviet Union in the aftermath of World War II and had been rebuilt into a communist soviet satellite country. However, as the Soviet Union began to crumble, so did its grip on East Germany. The people there knew that freedom was close to them, and somehow a rumor that the gates of the Berlin Wall stood wide open was broadcast on national TV, causing thousands of citizens to swarm to it hoping to get over into West Germany and freedom. The guards didn't know what to do, so they just let them through. Their leaders later confirmed that this was the right course of action, but it marked the end of communism in Germany.
