Japan gained many more strategic victories during the early days of World War II other than Pearl Harbor, and many of them were actually of more consequence. America was timid at first, refusing to engage the Japanese directly except for a few naval raids, allowing the Japanese to steamroll the Philippines and the same attitude by the British allowed them to take Singapore in the worst and most humiliating defeat in British history.
