While most nations squabbled and fought over lands in the New World while the Pope protested that he had decreed that Portugal and Spain got to split the New World between them (Not that anybody cared about what he had to say.), England decided to get a jump on everybody and seize lands in Asia. After all, the big money was still there. Spices still got pretty good money, and everybody pretty much forgot about Asia. So England took India and became fabulously wealthy from it.
