A Surprisingly Christian Message In How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World

How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World ended the popular series on a somewhat sad note. Hiccup and his friends encounter the fiercest threat they have ever faced in the shape of a dragon hunter, named Grimmel the Grisly, famed for hunting dragon species too extinction. They eventually defeat Grimmel, but in the process, they realize that there will always be evil humans ready to exploit the dragons' powers for their own gain. In a heartbreaking scene, Hiccup and his village say goodbye to their dragon friends as the dragons return to the Hidden World, to hide until they can return. This already speaks volumes about growing up, love, and loss. In a flashback, Stoick, Hiccup's deceased father, says that love is never without loss, but in the end, it's always worth it. At the end of the movie, Hiccup says that they will wait until humans and dragons can get along. In order for that to happen, humans would have to be perfect. The directors of HTTYD were not Christians, but they inadvertently cause us to look ahead, and as Christians, we look ahead to the coming of Jesus. Of course, HTTYD is fantasy, dragons, at least as depicted in the movie, do not exist. However, the film still points us to a time in the future when humanity will be cleansed. Jesus will come back, and this film makes us look forward to it. It shows how God really is in control over everything, even in kid's movies.
