The Tower plus Ellis are moving on fast, they are on the outskirts of Oregon. Along the way, that had stolen a mule from a trapper that had stolen it from the Army. They plan to give the mule back to the Army as soon as they reach Camp Axton. However, as soon as they arrive the Commander says that they will be detained and investigated. Ellis tricks the COmmander into thinking one of the Tower's have smallpox, allowing them to escape.
