There are lots of reasons why idolatry (Or more specifically why an idol couldn't be used to worship God.) was banned in the Old Testament. Idols implied that the deity being represented required things that only humans could give him. The idols were dressed, and food was given it through sacrifices. Lots of Mesopotamian gods were actually very dependent on their human worshippers. Not giving the deity what it needed would result in a curse laid down on the humans. One wonders how the idol can curse everyone but can't get a bite to eat.
