The Jews believed that several different types of angels populated the world. These angels ranged from routine messengers to other, more warlike, roles. For example, it is very likely that the Seraphs were believed to be fire serpents (A common trope in ancient eastern mythology). Another type was a Cherub, which was believed to have four faces and commonly appeared as guardians of kings. The ancient Jews also seemed to believe in demons, which were thought to exist in dark places, even in the shadows of the doorways of temples.
