The battle of Quaqar was one of the most important battles in that time. Shalmaneser III moved his army westward to deal with a resurgent coalition of twelve kings. The coalition later collapsed and Shalmaneser's power was maintained.
The battle of Carchemish was a last-ditch effort by the Egyptians and the collapsing Assyrian empire to keep control of, um, pretty much everything. The Assyrians were basically useless at this point because of their apparent total ineptitude at keeping their crumbling empire in one piece. The Egyptians, though formidable, were forced to retreat before the Babylonians and Medes, securing Babylonia's rise to power.
