Villian Analysis: How to Train Your Dragon:The Hidden World (Spoilers)

Recently, someone said that he/she did not like How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World because the villain was "puny." Most people know that the villain for that movie is Grimmel the Grisly, a dragon hunter. This person apparently thinks that a good villain has to ridiculously overpowered in order to be good. I'm here to prove him wrong. HelloFutureMe probably said it better then I could. A good villain is a person who can confront the hero's weaknesses. Let's take a look at Grimmel and Hiccup, the hero and villain of How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World. Grimmel is a ruthless, calculating, Dragon Hunter. He believes dragons are evil, and killing them all would bring peace to the world. He himself also explains that killing a dragon gives prestige and honor to the killer. In short, his goal is to exterminate dragons and to become a hero in the eyes of everyone else. Hiccup, on the other hand, believes that dragons are good and that Vikings and dragons can work together to make the world a better place. His biggest fear is losing his beloved dragon, Toothless. Grimmel's task throughout the movie is to capture Toothless for the Warlords (In reality he wants to kill him.). This confronts Hiccup's worst fear, losing Toothless, but it also makes him realize that if he really loves Toothless, he has to let him go. Grimmel makes Hiccup grow as a character, he isn't just some guy with a huge army and a creepy laugh trying to conquer the world because why not? As a side note, Grimmel is also interesting as a villain because he is exactly what Hiccup would have become if he killed Toothless in the very first movie. Looking at Drago Bludvist, the villain in the second movie, we can see that once again Drago is perfectly suited to confront Hiccup. Hiccup's biggest fear in this movie is failing his father as the next chieftain, of their home being destroyed. Drago confronts this very directly, killing his father and almost destroying his village, forcing Hiccup to confront this fear and overcome it. Anyway, that's my thoughts. Any questions or comments? That's what that comment button is for!
