Japanese Tragedy

During the hectic change from the feudal age to the industrial age in Japan, a young woman who lived in poverty was married into a family that also lived in poverty. This family worked industrially to get out of poverty, every minute was spent weaving, and the marriage was arranged simply to have another worker. The grandmother told the woman and her sisters-in-law that if they had time to clean to use it weaving instead. The woman as worked mercilessly every waking minute, and when she gave birth to her first child she was criticized by the grandmother for spending time caring for the child. Any time not spent weaving was time wasted. Eventually, the wife's husband left to be a soldier in Korea, without saying how long he'd be gone since he had no intention of keeping his wife. After all,s he was just a worker. When he came back twenty-four years later, he sent his son off to China to fight and kicked his former wife out of the house so his wealthy mistress could move in. For revenge,.the woman set the house on fire and was thrown into prison for eight years.
