Coolidge wasn't elected president at first. He became President of the United States after the current president, President Harding, died. Coolidge was the Vice President and thus became the actual President upon Harding's death. This was big news, more than just a new president. Coolidge was an extremely controversial figure, not even entirely backed by his own party, with the activist branch founded by Theodore Roosevelt in outright opposition to him.
