When the Europeans met the Japanese and the Chinese, it changed each culture drastically. Suddenly, there were massive economic opportunities in reading with the westerners, but there were also new dangers. The westerners were much more powerful militarily than the Japanese and the Chinese, and the country's perspectives had to change. Each culture had viewed itself as the center of the world, blessed by the gods to be the "higher race", something commonly seen in almost every culture, even the Americas, although in different ways. However, when they came upon culture more advanced and powerful than they were, that meant that this view was wrong. The Japanese changed their perspective, coming up with a new proverb, the sun and moon shine on all alike, but the Chinese stubbornly refused, leading to their downfall.
