The government has one power that makes it very unique as a consumer. They have printing presses and can literally produce money out of thin air, but should they do it? Printing money has a couple of effects on the economy. The first is that, temporarily, it boosts the economy. A flush of new cash in people's pockets prompts them to spend more, which boosts businesses ' incomes and allows them to hire more people and expand. However, printing money also lowers the value of money. It's easier to get two dollars so you value the two dollars less than you would. This fact means that inflation can quickly set in if governments abuse the right to print money.
