Tales of Valand: War of Darkness (Chapter 2)

The morning dawned, and the bright beams of sun chased away the violent storm. Daron held his small child and looked at it. It was a boy, wrapped in a strip of cloth torn from Daron's cloak. His wife, Aywen, was nearby. The birth had not gone smoothly, and she had not moved much since the delivery. Now she rose and sighed. She took her child and cradled him in her arms.
"What are we going to do now, Daron?" she asked. "We need food."
"And water and shelter," Daron said. He pointed to the horizon. Several more islands could be seen. The islands were in a group, with the island they were on being the largest. Behind them, a mountain with a glowing red tip reared itself majestically into the sky.
"Shall we to one of the other isles?" Aywen asked.
"No, this one is the largest, and thus likely has more resources," Daron said. He rose and took stock of the situation. They had his hunting knife and his sword, a small sack of bread that Daron had had the presence of mind to grab as he abandoned his ship, which was now sunk, and a baby.
"What will we call him?" Aywen wondered aloud.
"Drenwulf," Daron said. "It means-"
"I know what it means," Aywen smiled. "Warrior of the sea. I like it."
Suddenly, the light around them began to dim. Daron looked around. The birds had stopped singing. He could feel a sense of dread, a cold, bony hand of terror gripping his soul. Aywen shivered and moved closer to Daron. Daron drew his sword. Suddenly, Aywen screamed! A cloud of black smoke was coming out of the forest, and shaping itself into a human form. Two horrifying red eyes opened, and it reached out a hand for the child! Daron stabbed it with his knife, but to his horror, it went right through his target! He quickly changed tactics and reached for his blade, swinging it at the monster's head. This also passed through, but the smoke disintegrated, and a hissing sound like air escaping filled the air. Daron stood back, shocked. The smoke lew away. Suddenly, he heard something behind him, whirling he saw six of the wraith-like beasts before him, one with a terrible crown of shining steel, and a blade speeding for his face.
