Joe Tower and his clan have left For Laramie to winter at a place where they can get work, Snedeker's trading post. There, they find a young man named Ellis. Halfway through the winter, Ellis tells Joe that he wants to marry Joe's daughter, Barbra. To complicate things further, Ellis wants her to accompany him toa dance being held at Fort Laramie overnight, saying that she could stay at a friend of the Tower's.
