Alexander the Great, after completing his masterfully executed siege of Tyre, he proceeded to Israel, fully intending to do the Roman Empire's job and burn it to the ground. However, God reportedly gave the High Priest a vision, telling him to decorate Jerusalem for a festival and have the people of the city to go out and meet the conquerer. They did so, and Alexander spared the city.
